Cuban designer Lénore Herrera creates by hand accessories that merge design, visual arts, craftsmanship, and sewing–blending functionality with the elegance inherited from her family. 
In an interview with CubaPLUS CARICOM magazine, she shared that her beginnings as an accessory designer started with decorating yarey hats. Her idea was to reimagine this traditional Cuban countryside hat, bringing it into urban life by modernizing and rejuvenating its style.
She recalls that during her childhood, her birthday dresses were always made by her grandmother or a seamstress. For her 15th birthday celebration, a popular traditional Cuban party, she herself designed the outfit she wanted to wear, and all her designs were faithfully followed.
“In my house, it was customary to go shopping for fabrics to have clothes tailor-made. Sometimes we hired a seamstress, or my grandmother would do it herself–she sewed and embroidered beautifully. I even have some of her embroidered fabric pieces framed and hanging on the walls of my home–delicate, detailed threadwork that I treasure deeply,” she shared.
“Growing up in that environment, I absorbed that art–it shaped and inspired my creative path,” Herrera added.
Lénore–an artistically fitting name–explained that she and her brother used to draw from an early age, often getting scolded at school for sketching in their notebooks during class. Both of her parents constantly encouraged their artistic inclinations. Her love for drawing and passion for fashion led her to pursue a degree in design, a field her father had introduced her to.
“My goal was always fashion design, but my curiosity pushed me to explore the art of restoration. In 2001, I applied for a course in mural painting restoration—a very enriching chapter in my life, where I was fortunate to meet the visual artist Alain de la Cruz, who is now my husband,” she recounted. 
“Interior design always fascinated me, so I took a leap of faith into that field. Together with my brother, architect Romar Herrera, and my husband, we formed a team. For over 20 years, we carried out very interesting projects for the Sol Meliá hotel chain and for the private sector,” she noted.
“The pandemic brought an unexpected turn to my life. During months of confinement at home, I began decorating malangueta hats as a hobby, later moving on to yarey ones. I started designing handbags made from natural fibers and hand-painted canvas bags. That’s how Lénore Herrera Collection was born—a brand where I express my art through the design and creation of exclusive, high-quality pieces. My goal is to share my culture, create consciously, and ensure sustainable growth,” she explained.
“The accessories I design,” she concluded, “are a tribute to the soul, to art, and to craftsmanship. Each unique piece is carefully hand-painted, reflecting a delicate spirit that transforms it into a statement of art, culture, and conscious luxury.”

El arte de diseñar
La diseñadora cubana Lénore Herrera crea con sus manos accesorios donde se mezclan el diseño, las artes visuales, el oficio de la artesanía y la costura, combinando funcionabi-lidad y elegancia heredada de su familia.
Durante una entrevista con la revista CubaPLUS CARICOM expresó que sus comienzos como diseñadora de accesorios fueron decorando sombreros de yarey, su idea era reconceptualizar este sombrero típico de los campos de Cuba, llevándolos al área urbana, modernizándolos y rejuveneciéndolos.
Recuerda que en su infancia las batas de cumpleaños siempre fueron confeccionadas por su abuela o alguna costurera. Para la celebración de sus 15 años, fiesta tradicional popular cubana, ella misma diseñó el vestuario que quería lucir. Todos sus diseños fueron respetados.
En mi casa se estilaba salir de tiendas a comprar telas para hacerse ropa a la medida. Eventualmente se contrataban los servicios de una costurera o lo hacía mi abuela, que cosía y bordaba muy bien, incluso, tengo enmarcados con cristal y colgados en paredes de mi casa retazos de tela con bordados de ella, entresacados de hilo, un trabajo muy detallista, contó.
Rodeada de aquel ambiente me nutrí de ese arte y quedé influenciada para mi futura trayectoria, añadió Herrera.
Lénore, un nombre muy artístico, contó que ella y su hermano dibujaban desde niños hasta llevarse también, incluso, alguna que otra reprimenda en la escuela por reproducir en medio de clase esbozos en sus libretas. Su mamá y su papá motivaron constantemente su inclinación hacia las artes. Su vocación por el dibujo y pasión por la moda la llevaron a elegir la carrera de diseño, en aquel entonces descubierta por su padre.
Mi meta siempre fue el diseño de vestuario, pero mi curiosidad me llevó a explorar el arte de la restauración. En el año 2001 me presenté a una convocatoria para un curso de restauración de Pintura Mural, una etapa muy enriquecedora en mi vida donde coincidí afortunadamente con el artista visual Alain de la Cruz, mi esposo, narró. 
El diseño de interiores siempre me sedujo y me arriesgué a emprender en este campo, creamos un equipo con mi hermano, el arquitecto Romar Herrera, y mi esposo. Por más de 20 años ejecutamos proyectos muy interesantes para la cadena hotelera Sol Meliá y para el sector privado, señaló.
La pandemia le dio un giro inesperado a mi vida. Durante el encierro en nuestra casa, por varios meses, comencé como hobby a decorar sombreros de malangueta, luego de yarey.
Comencé a diseñar bolsos utilizando fibras naturales y bolsos de lienzo pintados a mano. Cree la marca Lénore Herrera Collection donde expreso mi arte a través del diseño y la confección de productos exclusivos y de alta calidad. Mi objetivo es compartir mi cultura, realizar un trabajo consciente y asegurarme de crecer de manera sostenible, explicó.
Los accesorios que diseño, dijo finalmente, son un homenaje al alma, al arte y a la artesanía. Piezas únicas, cuidadosamente pintadas a mano reflejando un espíritu delicado, convirtiéndolas en una declaración de arte, cultura y lujo consciente.
