The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) today honored Ellsworth John, the Ambassador of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as he concludes his diplomatic mission to the island.
During the ceremony—presided over by Acting Foreign Minister Gerardo Peñalver and the President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González—Ambassador John was awarded the Friendship Medal. This distinction recognizes his exemplary service and significant contributions to fostering fraternal ties between the two nations.
“Since his arrival in Havana nearly a decade ago, Ellsworth has worked tirelessly to strengthen our bilateral relations. We particularly recognize his pivotal role in coordinating solidarity aid when our nation was struck by hurricanes and other natural disasters,” noted Ileana Núñez, MINREX’s Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean.
“We have witnessed his courageous and unwavering condemnation of the unjust economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States—an embargo that has now reached unprecedented levels,” she added.
For his part, Ambassador John reflected on his experiences living in Cuba, highlighting the resilience and resolve of a people who, despite their own hardships, continue to share their resources to assist others in healthcare, climate resilience, and disaster mitigation.
“I am proud to be considered a friend of Cuba. While I return to my country in one week, I will continue to advocate for the end of the blockade, Cuba’s right to its chosen system of government, and its sovereign right to self-determination,” he concluded.
