Cuba Attends Social Sciences Conference with Large Delegation

Cuba is participating with a substantial delegation of researchers and directors in the 10th Latin American and Caribbean Social Sciences Conference, which commenced this past Monday in the Colombian capital.

In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, Yuri Triana, President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Agency of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba (Citma), stated that the large representation demonstrates the prestige the island nation holds in these fields within the region.

Many of the academics and scientists attending the event from Cuba participated in the forum "Cuba in the Context of Contemporary Counter-Hegemonic Struggles" during the day's proceedings.

During the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), Karina Batthyány, emphasized the vital role Cuba has played in recent years in the development of research and the diligent work and presentation of results materialized by member centers of that organization on the island.

Triana, for her part, highlighted the debate that emerged on issues related to alliances and the relationship between academia and politics, particularly in the implementation of new public policies that have been launched in the Caribbean nation in recent years.

She described the day's activities, in which several researchers and scientists participated, as fundamental and of strategic importance for the Cuban delegation.

Specifically, public policies related to demographic dynamics, population aging, gender equity, families, sexual and reproductive rights, childhoods and youth, social vulnerability, science, innovation, climate change, and social communication were addressed, she noted.

She also commented that 41 centers from Cuba are associated with CLACSO, among networks and institutions, of which four are research centers of Citma.

The official also highlighted that at the closing of the XXVIII Ordinary General Assembly of CLACSO, held last weekend, Georgina Alfonso, director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Cuban Agency of Social Sciences and Humanities, was elected as a member of its new steering committee.

The 10th Latin American and Caribbean Social Sciences Conference, the largest academic gathering of its kind worldwide, began last Monday in Bogotá, with the participation of approximately four thousand speakers.

The event, themed "Horizons and Transformations for Equality: Democracies, Resistances, Communities, Rights and Peace," is expected to feature more than 1,500 activities and the attendance of representatives from 937 institutions.

The conference, which concludes tomorrow, will also feature an International Book Fair of Social Sciences and Humanities and a film series.
