On Friday, the Dominican Republic concluded the 7th Latin American Sanitation Conference (LatinoSan 2026), an event dedicated to promoting sustainable solutions in water and sanitation infrastructure.
The three-day conference brought together experts, international organizations, and government representatives to discuss strategies aimed at expanding access to these essential services across Latin America and the Caribbean.
During the closing ceremony, Wellington Arnaud, Executive Director of the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage (Inapa), and Víctor Atallah, the Dominican Minister of Public Health, highlighted the critical role of sanitation as a cornerstone of public health, community well-being, and sustainable development.
Arnaud showcased the progress made by the Dominican Republic in water supply and sewerage systems, while underlining the necessity of strengthening regional cooperation to address ongoing challenges in the sector.
He also emphasized the implementation of a sanitation program in coastal and tourist areas covering over 200 kilometers of the Dominican coastline, widely regarded as one of the most ambitious initiatives of its kind in the region.
LatinoSan 2026 gathered officials and specialists from more than twenty countries to exchange best practices on building more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive systems. Discussions also focused on the pivotal role of sanitation in disease prevention and improving quality of life.
At the conclusion of the summit, it was announced that Belize will host the next edition of LatinoSan.
The event was organized by the Dominican Ministry of Public Health and Inapa, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). It concluded a comprehensive agenda centered on innovation, inclusion, and resilience to address the region's challenges in guaranteeing sanitation services.
