CubaPLUS Magazine, from the island to the world

In 2007, the English-language magazine CubaPLUS appeared in the publishing world, dedicated to sharing the many attractions of Cuba for tourism and in other areas, which, 15 years later, is a benchmark for information about the Caribbean island.

The founder of the project was Canadian businessman Dominic Soave, with the aim -he tells us- of showing off what Cuba has to offer to its visitors.

CubaPLUS Magazine -he adds- reflects all the great things the country has to offer to the tourism and business sectors, and also talks about different aspects of Cuban life.

CubaPLUS Magazine, from the island to the world"I made this project a reality with the help of very good friends, who provided me with knowledge I didn't have about publishing a magazine and also financial support, along with collaborators who took on the job and helped me undertake this adventure," Dominic recalls.

From the beginning, the magazine was produced jointly with the Latin American news agency Prensa Latina as co-publisher, and its original target was the significant and demanding Canadian market, the main source of travelers to this nation for many years.

The project grew in markets and editions, so the Spanish-language supplement CubaPLUS Latinos was created. Currently, the publications, each with a hundred pages, reach the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean in quarterly print editions, and practically the whole world through its digital media.

The wide range of topics covered by CubaPLUS include tourist destinations, cultural events, sports, fashion, cuisine, economic investment opportunities, advances in health and quality of life available to people from other latitudes, Cuban customs and traditions.

In addition to the natural beauty of this archipelago and the growing development of tourist services, CubaPLUS also highlights the spaces dedicated to Cuba's rich culture in its different aspects, such as visual arts, music, heritage and architecture.

An example of this is the pages of work by two hundred artists from painting, engraving, sculpture, handicrafts and photography, both well-known and newcomers, as a result of which an interesting collection was created that reflects several of the paths followed by contemporary Cuban art. The first volume of the CubaPLUS Collection Catalog, for which prestigious art critics have written, has already been published.

Numerous soloists and groups have also given testimony of their work in the music section, essential in this island known worldwide for its rhythms and melodies.

Beyond journalism, CubaPLUS is one of the main sponsors of the "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" Drum Festival, an event focused on percussion which unites numerous Cuban and foreign artists of international stature every year.

In reviewing the progress made by CubaPLUS, its founding director said he felt satisfied: "I estimate that in these 15 years we have played our part in the number of Canadians who have visited the country and, in addition, we have been information providers for anyone interested in being present in Cuba, whether as tourists or in the economic and business sector.

Although the printed editions have been consistently published, the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis have more recently created sensitive issues in all orders, especially in the editorial field, as part of a panorama that could call any dream into question.

Dominic, do you regret having launched this project?

"I will never regret creating CubaPLUS. I have always felt a great passion for this project and for it to go ahead, and I think it will continue to be a great achievement, especially because my daughter Nathali, a graduate in Social Communication, is entering the company and will help me."
