Rumba lovers are delighted to know that they will once again be able to enjoy this contagious rhythm when the 20th edition of the International Drum Festival "Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam" returns to Havana in March 2023.
For 4 days, the drums will sound once again throughout Havana. As well as the usual competitions, master classes and conferences, there will be great shows and dances in theaters, hotels and public squares, turning the so-called ‘Wonder City’ once again into one of the cultural capitals of the world, said prominent musician Giraldo Piloto, the event president, to this publication.
He added that as well as the main venue, Salón Rosado de la Tropical, the Tablao in Centro Habana is expected to host multiple shows.
The next edition will also pay tribute to Lázaro Ros as an essential figure of our Afro-Cuban heritage, he said, and that, regardless of the date scheduled for the inauguration, the qualifying rounds of the international Casino and Rumba competitions will be held from February 28 in the Salón Rosado, for all dancers of any age and nationality who wish to participate.
Finally, Piloto expressed his happiness about the return of this great Cuban music festival, yearned for by many every year, and he hopes that there will be greater participation than in previous editions, especially from Caribbean countries.
Since its creation in 2000, the Fiesta del Tambor or Havana Rhythm and Dance Festival’s purpose has been to honor the life and work of Guillermo Barreto -Piloto's uncle-, one of Cuba's best drummers in the last century. He founded the Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, the Grupo Los Amigos, the instrumental quintet "Descargas Cubanas". He was a great music producer and an exceptional musician in the broadest sense of the word.
