Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended today's opening of the 1st International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future,” dedicated to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.
René Barrios, Director of the Fidel Castro Studies Center, noted that the event comes amidst a particularly complex global backdrop, making it ever more vital to revisit the Commander-in-Chief's ideas and principles.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Esteban Lazo, President of the National Assembly of People's Power; Prime Minister Manuel Marrero; Roberto Morales, Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party of Cuba; along with other high-ranking officials and representatives of social and mass organizations.
Running through August 13—marking the centennial of the revolutionary leader's birth—the event is envisioned as a broad, inclusive, and multifaceted gathering grounded in unity and emancipation, serving as an academic, political, and scientific forum for reflection and action.
Bringing together over 1,500 delegates, including more than 1,000 international guests from roughly 60 countries, the colloquium explores Fidel Castro’s legacy as a revolutionary, statesman, and military strategist, examining his political and social philosophy, Marxist practice, and the building of socialism in Cuba.
Discussions will also address his impact on foreign policy, the pursuit of peace, and anti-imperialism, along with his humanist and internationalist contributions across education, science, culture, healthcare, and sports.
Additionally, sessions will highlight his cultural imprint on the arts and collective memory, the enduring relevance of his thought amid 21st-century challenges, and unity as a catalyst for regional integration and cooperation, with a firm emphasis on social justice, national sovereignty, and self-determination.
