Agritourism has become a top preference for travelers visiting Cuba today, with a prime example found at the Patria sugar mill in the island’s central region.
Despite the economic challenges facing the nation, this burgeoning travel segment is highly popular among visitors seeking educational experiences and quiet intimacy on their vacations.
Closely tied to local production, culture, and regional traditions, agritourism in Cuba features unique destinations centered around former industrial powerhouses of the sugar sector, such as the Patria mill.
This former sugar factory has been converted into a museum, where both indoor and outdoor exhibits showcase the rich history of Cuba’s "sweet grain" (sugar) industry.
Along with sharing fascinating historical insights, the tour guides work alongside a group of local actors who bring to life historical enactments from the era of slavery. The exhibition is further enriched by heritage industrial machinery and an impressive fleet of vintage locomotives that defined bygone eras.
At the end of the tour, visitors board a vintage train for a scenic ride through historic sugarcane fields, arriving at a local farm for lunch. Here, guests can immerse themselves in traditional rural life, enjoying authentic Cuban country cuisine and folklore.
The Patria sugar mill is located just three kilometers from the town of Morón in the central province of Ciego de Ávila (36 kilometers from the provincial capital). It lies 75 kilometers from the popular northern resort cays and about 500 kilometers from Havana, the capital of the archipelago. This historic sugar mill was operational from 1914 until 2000.
