More than 60 oral or written presentations on aspects related to research, new technologies and innovation in tobacco cultivation, were analyzed in Havana during a global forum.
Some 300 participants in the 1st International Congress of Tobacco Research, Investa 2019, taking place since Monday at Havana's International Conference Center, analyzed works on genetic improvement and phytopathology. Aspects such as the conservation of plant genetic resources, agricultural practices and plant physiology, were also discussed. French expert Francois Dorlhac, of the (Cooperation Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco ,CORESTA), referred to the development of innovations to identify pathogens, very useful to fight specific bacteria that damage crops. Eugenio Espino, of the Tobacco Research Institute (IIT), which organized the Congress, highlighted that center's achievements in obtaining two commercial varieties, Havana 2000 and Havana 92, not susceptible to the effects of blue mold, one of the main pests that attack tobacco crops. During the second day of the event, presentations were also made regarding pre-industrial tobacco processes, and industrial conventional smoking products and emerging products. Experts from the United States, France, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Brazil and other nations are participating in the Congress, which concludes on Friday
