Cuban Artist Michel Mirabal Returns with Major Exhibition in Havana

"This is an exhibition I've been trying to mount for 15 years," stated Cuban visual artist Michel Mirabal about his show "Tú no me conoces" (You Don't Know Me), which is set to open on November 8th in the capital.

Approximately 50 pieces – two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and everyday objects transformed into symbolic works – will be on display at the Centro Provincial de Artes Plásticas y Diseño Luz y Oficio, located in the city's historic district. Here, the artist will unveil his talent across various visual art mediums.

Explaining the reason behind the exhibition's title, Mirabal told Prensa Latina: "I'm known as the painter of the Banderas (Flags) series, and that makes me happy, but I'm sure people didn't know this type of work. I wanted to show that I do many more things, as I've created 14 series over 30 years of my career."

"Tú no me conoces" is curated by Nelson Herrera Ysla and Andrés Santana, who assert that the exhibition fully reaffirms its status as a visual and narrative essay.

"It's an exercise in affirmation and liberation," Santana declared, "because Mirabal can free himself from the stereotypes of being 'the flags artist,' and because he has been able to demonstrate his capacity to generate a corpus of symbolisms, metaphors, and, if you will, syntactical arrangements through his artwork."

The Cuban artist's exhibition will also serve as a community project. Until January 15, 2026, the institution will host debates, meetings with students, and other cultural activities.

Upon the conclusion of the exhibition period, a catalog will be published as a visual archive of the process. It will not only showcase the artworks but also the entire creative process behind their development.

Michel Mirabal also revealed that he will donate medical supplies to those affected in eastern Cuba following Hurricane Melissa.
