Cuba will raise the level of operations of its main international airports this year as part of the aviation development program until 2030, reported a source from the Ministry of Transportation (Mitrans).
The investment process foresees the expansion and remodeling of terminal 3 of the country's main airport, the José Martí airport in the capital, which will increase its capacity by 30 percent for the arrival of passengers, said the president of the Cuban Aviation Corporation (CAC), Joel Archer.
In this same airport, the capacity of the transit terminal number 2 will be expanded, which would ensure coverage for passengers and airlines in the face of a sudden increase in operations, said the director on the social network Facebook.
He also mentioned the rehabilitation carried out at the airports in the center of the island, Jardines del Rey and Cayo Largo del Sur, terminals that guaranteed the start of the tourist season and the International Tourism Fair in 2024.
The Cayo Largo del Sur airport was practically new, emphasized the president of the Cuban Aviation Corporation. He added that last year they repaired the air terminal located in the Varadero resort (west), and at this time they are working on the eastern ones in Camagüey and Holguín, the latter to improve the air conditioning of their premises.
The president of CAC assured they are also evaluating projects to advance in 2025 in the repair of the Santiago de Cuba airport. Likewise, the landing strips of almost all the mentioned terminals, including the national one in Isla de la Juventud (southwest) are receiving improvements in order to further raise the safety conditions for their operations.
The investment program in Cuban airports is moving forward as planned, despite the fact that the United States blockade of the island limits the supply of fuel and other resources, said Archer.
