Turquino National Park: Home to Cuba's Tallest and Most Majestic Peak

Nestled within the Sierra Maestra mountain range in the eastern province of Granma, Turquino National Park is one of Cuba’s premier natural treasures. It is renowned for its breathtaking biodiversity, rugged mountain landscapes, and rich cultural history. Most notably, the park is named after Pico Turquino—the highest point on the island, standing at an elevation of 1,974 meters above sea level—making it a highly sought-after destination for mountaineers and nature lovers alike.

Situated in the municipality of Guamá along the eastern reaches of the Sierra Maestra, the park encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, from lush tropical rainforests to high-altitude coniferous forests. This makes it a vital sanctuary for abundant flora and fauna, harboring numerous species such as the Cuban trogon (tocororo, Cuba's national bird) and the jutía (hutia), along with a wide variety of endemic plants found nowhere else on Earth.

Beyond its natural splendor, Turquino National Park holds immense historical significance, having served as a key stronghold of the Cuban revolutionary struggle during the 1950s. Along the park's winding trails and pathways, visitors can explore historic sites that commemorate these pivotal events. Notably, at the very summit of the peak stands a bust of Cuba’s National Hero, José Martí. Sculpted by Gilma Madera, the monument was placed there by a group of patriots in 1953 to mark the centenary of his birth.

Ecotourism is one of the park’s primary draws. Here, visitors can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, and experiencing pristine nature in its purest form. Several of these trails lead directly to the summit of Pico Turquino, rewarding hikers with breathtaking, sweeping panoramic views.

For travelers journeying to this beautiful region of Eastern Cuba, a visit to Turquino National Park is highly recommended. It is a destination that invites reflection, offers adventure, and showcases nature at its finest—making it an essential stop for anyone wishing to experience the authentic essence of "Cuba Única" (Unique Cuba).
