UN Tourism and CAF promote sustainable development in Latin America

A slight improvement in the weather in the Spanish capital gave a little warmth to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by UN Tourism and CAF on Thursday, focused on promoting sustainable development in Latin America.

Rather, the projection aims to protect and increase support for the industry without chimneys, when a tremendous boom is seen during the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) at the IFEMA-Madrid fairgrounds.

With a qualitative and quantitative leap of consolidated destinations such as the Dominican Republic, the arrival of Brazil, the South American giant positioned as Guest Partner Country, and the diversity of offers from Colombia, Peru, Panama, Jamaica, Argentina, Cuba, Guatemala and Costa Rica, they recommend a constructive look at the leisure sector.

UN Tourism and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) agreed under the umbrella of Fitur, to work together to give greater visibility to the Regional Brand. The text was signed by the Secretary General of UN Tourism, Zurab Pololikashvili, and the Executive President of CAF, Sergio Díaz-Granados.

This agreement represents an important step towards increasing the visibility of the rich tourism potential of Latin America and the Caribbean, Pololikashvili told the press. For his part, Díaz-Granados commented that “Latin America and the Caribbean is an incredibly diverse region from a cultural, geographic and economic point of view.The Regional Brand offers a unique vision and with the support of UN Tourism, it will help us promote and grow the tourism sector to boost its impact on growth and opportunities.”

Fitur was inaugurated the day before with the participation of 156 countries, 9,500 companies and more than 880 exhibitors. The strength of Latin America and the Caribbean is perceptible in Pavilion 3 of IFEMA, one of the busiest and most cheerful of the show, along with the host Spain.

The Spanish Minister of Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, was delighted with the statistics for last year from the Iberian country, which received more than 94 million travellers, spending 126 billion euros.
