WestJet's Inaugural Flight Touches Down in Cuban Capital

WestJet's inaugural seasonal flight, carrying 173 passengers from Toronto, touched down in Havana this Thursday. This significant event opens new avenues for Canadian tourists to experience the 'Wonder City,' a globally recognized destination renowned for its unique charm and rich heritage.

During the flight's welcoming ceremony, Canadian Ambassador to Cuba, Marianick Tremblay, expressed her delight at the new connection between her country and Havana. She highlighted the importance of bilateral relations, especially as the two nations celebrate 80 years of diplomatic ties. Ambassador Tremblay also acknowledged Canada's significant role in Cuban tourism.

Gihana Galindo, Director of the Cuba Tourist Board in Toronto, echoed this sentiment, stating: "We are delighted to continue expanding the range of tourism products and connectivity available to Canadian travelers." She added, "Customers now have the perfect opportunity to connect directly with the profound culture, history, and heritage that a city like Havana offers. This access will allow them to fully discover the city's historical, culinary, and cultural richness. I particularly recommend a Thursday-to-Sunday getaway to fully immerse oneself in its vibrant atmosphere."

Galindo further reiterated her satisfaction with the resumption of direct flights to the Cuban capital, noting: "Travelers can now easily combine Varadero's relaxing beach experience with the vibrant and historic city of Havana, creating a highly attractive product for the Canadian market."

Mike Perkins, Senior Manager of Airport Affairs at WestJet, commented, "Havana is a truly inspiring destination, and we are thrilled to make it even more accessible for Canadians." He added, "This route reflects our commitment to offering more opportunities for Canadians to discover unique destinations, whether they seek cultural experiences, historical charm, or simply a Caribbean getaway. Our bi-weekly service between Toronto and Havana provides guests with the flexibility to craft their perfect escape."

The new direct Toronto-Havana-Toronto service will operate twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays. This connection is expected to attract not only traditional tourists but also a diverse array of travelers, including business professionals, academics, students, and general tourists. It is also poised to foster educational exchanges and encourage participation in significant cultural, sporting, scientific, and academic events held in the Cuban capital.
