More than just a photographer, Michael C. Lam considers himself an artist of the lens, for a photograph that transcends from a simple snapshot to a work of art is to him a masterpiece.
Born and raised in Guyana, Lam is a fierce lover of photography, which he taught himself: "I learnt by using the camera, reading articles online and in magazines, and from good friends like Nikhil Ramkarran, who helped me immensely as we both learnt the techniques and art of photography. I had access to digital cameras from around 2002, and over the next ten years, I learned a lot, enough for my work to start getting noticed," he told CubaPLUS Guyana in an interview.
"Sometime in 2005," he continued, "I had the opportunity to visit the interior of Guyana, where I first saw the Rupununi savannahs and the Pakaraima mountains, and I thought that one day I would have to find a way to show these beautiful scenes. In the years that followed, I practiced with various compact cameras, learning as I experimented."
For this artist, photography is a way of expressing to others how he observes certain scenes, and he sees it as a way of communicating how he sees things and how others perceive it.
This professional, who works as a graphic designer, is currently mainly interested in capturing seascapes, although he also follows street photography very closely.
Lam noted that he has been fortunate to have participated in a few exhibitions and among them he mentioned Coastal Wanderings with Nikhil Ramkarran at The National Gallery of Art; Castellani House, Guyana, and at the Guyana Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition (GVACE), where he won the Bronze Medal (both in 2012 and 2017). In addition, in 2014 he was a principal juror in Capture Guyana (National Photography Competition).
Michael C. Lam has participated in many exhibitions and competitions in recent years and his future projects include the publication of two books with other photography professionals.
