The excellent state of relations between Cuba and Guyana was underlined by Ambassador Halim Majeed, during the celebration in Havana of the 53rd anniversary of the National Holiday of that nation, commemorated on February 23.

He expressed that after half a century of existence, &our relations are solid. They have withstood the test of time and will expand as we continue to train more students in Cuba", of which around 50 are studying medicine specialties on the island. Likewise, he elaborated on the possibilities of expanding commercial relations, since, in its development, he explained, Guyana needs large quantities of aggregates, cement and steel to carry out large-scale construction projects, as well as molasses for its rum industry.

He pointed out that authorities from the two countries are examining an agricultural project in Guyana within the framework of the regional food security program led by President Irfaan Ali, and this year "we will launch a sports project while reinforcing our collaboration" with the Institute National of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation of Cuba.

He pointed out that as the country grows and develops "we will be on the world scene advocating for peace, respect for national sovereignty and human development". The ambassador sent a greeting to President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Army General Raúl Castro, and the Cuban Party and Government and "we tell them with a clear and resounding voice: long live the friendship between Guyana and Cuba."

In his speech, the diplomat expressed his solidarity with the peoples of Türkiye and Syria, after a minute's silence was rendered during the ceremony for the victims of the violent earthquake on February 6, and he also spoke "for lasting peace and the end of all conflicts in that region". Halim Majeed highlighted that the celebration of this 53rd anniversary of the birth of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana takes place on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Caricom, , "which constitutes a significant milestone for the region."

He added his country is one of the founders of this group, and plays a very active role in its actions, which are now more focused on regional food security, the fight against climate change and the reform of the global financial architecture, among others. issues.

Likewise, the nation has an active role in the Association of Caribbean States and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, as well as in other regional and international organizations, he added.

The diplomat also highlighted the strong economic growth of his country in recent years, which makes it possible to materialize important advances in the development of agriculture, health, housing, education and other sectors, and pays special attention to vulnerable groups and communities.

The meeting was attended by Gustavo Veliz, director of Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean of the Cuban Foreign Ministry, members of the diplomatic corps and young Guyanese studying in Cuba, among other guests.
