The 58th anniversary of Guyana's independence was celebrated in Cuba with an emotional event, ceremony that took place in the eastern city of Camagüey, with the presence of the ambassador of that Caribbean country, His Excellency Mr. Halim Majeed.

Speaking at the event, Halim Majeed highlighted the historical significance of the commemoration, which for the first time it was held in that Cuban city, while expressing gratitude for the hospitality and affection received by the inhabitants of that territory during the several visits made.

Later he highlighted the resilience of his country when it achieved independence 58 years ago. The British Empire and the sacrifice it has cost in favor of the construction of a  sovereign republic. In that context, he praised Cuba's permanent tradition of solidarity with other nations of the world and mentioned the commercial links between both countries, highlighting their extensive possibilities, dating back more than 50 years.

For his part, Mr. Quincy Younge, First Secretary of the Guyana embassy in Cuba, believed that this event is “an exaltation of freedom and the affirmation of a republic that embraces its own culture, development and economy”.

Also attending the event, held at the Santa Cecilia Convention Center, in the Camagüey capital, dignitaries from the embassy of the Caribbean country in Cuba, provincial authorities, local business leaders and special guests.

Guyana was a British colony until May 26, 1966, when it achieved independence. within the Commonwealth of Nations.
