Guyana will soon have a new stadium with capacity for 10,000 people that will serve as venue for various activities, including cricket, concerts and other major events.

According to local press reports, the construction of the Berbice Stadium was recently inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and is expected to become one of the largest sports facilities in Guyana, comparable to the Providence National Stadium, East Bank of Demerara.

The new development also includes a multi-use center in Palmyra in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).The facility is not only a great opportunity for sports lovers in the region, but also has great potential to train young athletes into world-class athletes, and is expected to play an important  role in trainingcricketers, which will add to the group of international-class cricketers that Guyana has produced, the Guyanese president said.

He later referred to the government's efforts to modernize Region Six, including upgrading health care facilities to provide world-class services, while exploring the possibility of building a new bridge over the riverBerbice and establish an industrial, manufacturing and agricultural processing center, among other projects.

It is expected that the new stadium will enable greater sports development in the region and more economic benefits, taking into account that it will make it possible to carry out national and international sports competitions and create better opportunities for small businesses, while boosting tourism in the region.
