October 7 marks a date of special significance, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Medicines Marketing and Distribution Company (EMCOMED). Two decades of work have consolidated it as the specialized logistics operator that guarantees the pharmaceutical supply chain, making it a vital player in the well-being and health of the Cuban people. 
EMCOMED was born from the reorganization of assets and resources of Basic Business Units of the now-defunct FARMACUBA. Its founding objective was to close the production cycle, encompassing everything from the import of raw materials to the national distribution of finished products. From its very beginnings, it has operated under Business Improvement, currently subordinated to the Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Industries Group (BioCubaFarma).
The company is structured into a General Directorate, eleven functional directorates, and 21 Basic Business Units (UEB), giving it nationwide reach. This infrastructure is key to fulfilling its mission: to be an efficient and high-quality logistics operator that contributes to the people’s health. EMCOMED plays a role in the entire chain: procuring raw materials, packaging supplies, and reagents for the industry, and later carrying out the national distribution of medicines, reagents, and aseptic materials to healthcare institutions.
With the vision of becoming a reference 4PL logistics operator (a company specialized in managing logistics and transportation needs for other entities) both nationally and internationally, EMCOMED also manages logistics services for exports and supports initiatives such as Operación Milagro and humanitarian aid, even with field hospitals in cases of disasters.
Throughout its history, its work has been recognized with important awards. Among them are the Award for Economic Efficiency in 2015, the Provincial Award for Technological Innovation in 2012 and 2014, and recognition as an Outstanding Collective at the XVI Fórum de Ciencia y Técnica, also in 2015. 
EMCOMED’s commitment has been tested during the most difficult times in the country. During the COVID-19 pandemic and after the devastating explosion at the supertankers in Matanzas, the company demonstrated a rapid and unconditional response, ensuring the flow of essential supplies and medicines. EMCOMED is always ready to act whenever Cuba needs it.
But the true strength and heart of this company lie in its workers. With their dedication, commitment, and daily performance, they are the driving force that ensures the operability of Cuba’s complex pharmaceutical logistics network, closing the production cycle and keeping people’s health and well-being at the very center of its mission.

20 años comprometidos con la salud del pueblo
El 7 de octubre se alza como una fecha de especial significado, marcando el 20 aniversario de la Empresa Comercializadora y Distribuidora de Medicamentos (EMCOMED). Dos décadas de trayectoria la han consolidado como el operador logístico especializado que garantiza la cadena de suministro farmacéutica, siendo un actor vital para el bienestar y la salud del pueblo cubano.
EMCOMED nació de la reorganización de bienes y recursos de Unidades Empresariales de Base de la extinta FARMACUBA. Su objetivo fundacional fue cerrar el ciclo productivo, abarcando desde la importación de insumos hasta la distribución nacional de productos terminados. Desde sus inicios opera bajo el Perfeccionamiento Empresarial, subor-dinada actualmente al Grupo de las Industrias Biotecnológica y Farmacéuticas (BioCubaFarma).
La empresa se articula en una Dirección General, once direcciones funcionales y 21 Unidades Empre-sariales de Base (UEB), lo que le permite tener una extensión a lo largo y ancho del país. Esta infraestructura es clave para llevar a cabo su misión: ser un operador logístico eficaz y de calidad que contribuye a la salud del pueblo.
EMCOMED interviene en toda la cadena: realiza el aprovisionamiento de materias primas, material de envases y reactivos a la industria y, luego, ejecuta la distribución nacional de medicamentos, reactivos y material aséptico a las instituciones de salud.
Con la visión de convertirse en un operador logístico 4PL (empresa especializada en gestionar las necesidades de logística y transporte de otras entidades) de referencia nacional e internacional, EMCOMED también gestiona servicios logísticos para la exportación y apoya iniciativas como la Operación Milagro y la ayuda humanitaria, incluso con hospitales de campaña en casos de catástrofes.
A lo largo de su historia, su labor ha sido reconocida con importantes premios. Entre ellos destacan el Premio por la Eficiencia Económica en 2015, el Premio Provincial por Innovación Tecnológica en 2012 y 2014 y el reconocimiento como Colectivo Destacado en el XVI Fórum de Ciencia y Técnica, también en 2015.
El compromiso de EMCOMED se ha puesto a prueba en los momentos más difíciles del país. Durante la pandemia de la COVID-19 y tras la devastadora explosión de los supertanqueros en Matanzas, la empresa demostró una respuesta rápida e incondicional, garantizando el flujo de insumos y medicamentos esenciales. EMCOMED siempre está a la orden y lista para actuar cada vez que Cuba lo necesita.
Pero la verdadera fuerza y el corazón de esta empresa residen en sus trabajadores. Ellos, con su dedicación, entrega y desempeño diario son el motor impulsor que asegura la operatividad de la compleja red logística farmacéutica cubana, cerrando el ciclo productivo y poniendo la salud y el bienestar del pueblo siempre en el centro de su labor.
