Cuba’s rising stars from Acosta Danza Yunior are setting off for new horizons today, following the announcement of their upcoming performance season in the United Kingdom.
Under the artistic direction of world-renowned Cuban dancer and choreographer Carlos Acosta, the company will take the stage at the Lighthouse Poole (June 9–10) and Sadler’s Wells East (June 17–20).
The repertoire features two world premieres: Capriccio by Kit Holder—set to the music of Joseph-Marie-Clement Dall’Abacco and inspired by the surrealist works of René Magritte—and End, a duet by Didy Veldman choreographed to the compositions of Arvo Pärt. The program is rounded out by Susana Pous’s Fuga and Juliano Nunes’s Mundo Interpretado.
As announced by the company on its digital platforms, a key highlight of this tour is the international debut of a new generation of Cuban dancers, all trained at the prestigious Acosta Danza Academy.
Acosta Danza Yunior’s artistic identity is rooted in a contemporary style that fuses Cuban modern dance with the island’s rich folk and popular traditions, all while maintaining the technical rigor of classical ballet. The ensemble "harnesses the raw power and creative audacity of young professionals on a path toward expressive renewal."
The company’s name is a deliberate play on words: it references Carlos Acosta’s middle name (Yunior) and the Latin term Iunior (younger than...), used to denote those entering a professional discipline.
