It happened in the year 2000: the kingdom of nature settled in the Buenavista area, in the central provinces of Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de &Aávila, was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, in recognition of the conservation work of its terrestrial, marine and coastal areas, which meant one more commitment and an incentive for those involved.
It is a portion of Cuba formed by varied ecosystems, almost four thousand km long, which contain a high ecological value due to its wide biodiversity, genetic funds, also full of devastating riches of flora and fauna. And we add: it has the beauty of incredible landscapes. It is located north of Cuba, as part of the Sabana Camagüey archipelago.
Exceptional are the so-called Stone keys, the only ones of their kind in the country, in addition to the sensational abrasive natural arches, tidal niches, coastal cliffs and the largest sand dunes in Cuba. The gift of more than 20 kilometers of beaches is also a gift that nature gave to these wild places. It is not all: there are several swampy areas, such as the Guayaberas wetland.
There are strips of the coast endowed with the so-called calcareous packages such as Lomas, Las Tasajeras, Caguanes, Guayarúes and Judas. They are all important speleological systems. Buenavista is a paradise for the life and reproduction of endangered species of flora and fauna, with a high national, regional and local endemism, both marine and terrestrial.
From the extraordinary manatees, an endangered native mammal, to the familiar platform dolphins, and the American alligator. One cannot fail to mention the Cuban toad, the iguana, the lizard from the coast of Yaguajay and the majá of Santamaría, the country crane, the tocororo, the butterfly bat, including the only known freshwater cave sponge in the world.
Well, friends, we must end when we just started talking… Buenavista is synonymous of vibrant and full natural life. There they work to preserve it.
