Cuba Confirms 506-Strong Athlete Delegation for Santo Domingo 2026

Cuba today confirmed a delegation of 506 athletes for the upcoming Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.

During a briefing with sports media to mark World Sports Journalists Day, José Antonio Miranda, High-Performance Director of the Cuban Sports Institute, detailed that 32 percent of the squad possesses prior experience in regional events, with the delegation averaging 25 years of age.

According to the official, Cuba aims to secure more than 68 medals across 43 sporting disciplines in a bid to maintain a top-three finish in the overall medal standings.

Miranda emphasized that the delegation has strong medal prospects throughout the competition schedule, which runs from July 25 to August 7, with combat sports, athletics, and sport shooting expected to lead the charge.

The director indicated that the delegation's advance team is scheduled to depart next week, with the water polo squad set to be the first to compete, ahead of the opening ceremony on July 24.

During the press briefing, Miranda praised the high motivation, dedication, and commitment of the athletes, who have navigated a complex training cycle compounded by the tightening of the U.S. economic embargo against the Caribbean nation.
