Cuba Sends Eight Athletes to Regional Athletics Championship

Cuba will compete with eight representatives in the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Championships, to be held from August 15th to 17th in Freeport, Bahamas, as reported this Wednesday by the weekly publication Jit.

Discus throwers Mario Díaz, with a recent personal best of 67.44 meters, and Melany Matheus stand out in the roster announced by the national track and field commission of the Greater Antilles, and published by the aforementioned outlet in its digital edition.

Also part of the group is high jumper Dacsy Brisón, who recently set a personal best of 1.91 meters and requires international competitions to improve her results.

Hammer thrower Ronald Mencía, now recovered from an illness that kept him out of training for several weeks, shot putters Dianelis Delis and Juan Carley Vázquez, triple jumper Andy Hechevarría, and long-distance runner Anisleidis Ochoa complete the selected athletes.

"To assemble the team, we considered that several of them have the potential to achieve qualifying marks or secure a spot by ranking for the World Championships in Tokyo," National Commissioner Rolando Charroo told Jit.

"We also analyzed those who have good positions in the Central American and Caribbean rankings, as we are thinking about the Games next year in Santo Domingo," the director added regarding the selection process.

Among those chosen, Carley also has good recent marks, having thrown 19.90 meters in the last national team competition, and specialists believe he may soon exceed 20 meters.

For her part, Ochoa, despite having few international opportunities on the track, achieved national records this year in the 5,000 meters (15:33.07 minutes) and 10,000 meters (33:13.00 minutes).
