As in many nations across the globe, Cuba celebrates International Women's Day on March 8th. This tribute is deeply deserved, recognizing that beyond their vital roles as mothers, wives, and daughters, women are a cornerstone of Cuban society and a formidable force driving the nation forward.
It is noteworthy that Cuban women have achieved remarkable levels of empowerment. Today, they represent 66% of the country’s technical and professional workforce and hold 55.7% of the seats in Parliament. Furthermore, they have reached gender parity within the scientific community, where many Cuban female scientists lead world-class innovations.
Women stand out in every facet of the country’s social fabric. In sports, for instance, one must mention renowned athletes such as María Caridad Colón, Ana Fidelia Quirós, Yipsi Moreno, and Deborah Andollo, to name but a few. In the realm of culture, the list of icons is equally extensive, including figures like Juana Bacallao, Corina Mestre, and the legendary Alicia Alonso. In the annals of history, the names of Mariana Grajales, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Ana Betancourt, Celia Sánchez Manduley, and Vilma Espín remain essential.
These milestones trace their roots back to 1959 with the victory of the Cuban Revolution. This historical turning point spearheaded gender equality, fostering women’s integration into the workforce, education, and social life, which in turn transformed traditional gender roles. Despite current economic challenges, the commitment to equality and the struggle against patriarchal stereotypes remains steadfast.
Finally, one cannot overlook the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC). Founded on August 23, 1960, it has been the flagship organization for Cuban women, championing every achievement reached thus far. This was evident during its inaugural ceremony when the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, reaffirmed his vision of the role of women, describing them as a true army in service of the Revolution and famously stating: "A woman is a Revolution within the Revolution."
We extend our warmest congratulations to all Cuban women and women across the world on their day. May you continue to lead the successful struggle for your rights, today and always.
