Washington, Jan 26 (Prensa Latina) Cuban contemporary dance company Malpaso wraps up a successful tour of the United States on Sunday with its last performance at the Joyce Theater in New York, which has become its second home.
According to Fernando Saez, co-founder and executive director of the dance group, the result is due to the high quality of dancers and musicians, and an audience that ensured all performances have been with a full theater.
“This is the third stop of this tour and our tenth season at the Joyce Theater,” Saez told Prensa Latina over the phone. He recalled that “the company’s debut at that theater was in March 2014.”The 11-dancer company arrived in the United States on January 13, performed at the Byham Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, two days later, and then at the Emerson Paramount Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
String quartet Alma, pianist Aldo Lopez-Gavilan, and violinist Ilmar Gavilan accompany Malpaso in its performances.
Saez explained that the repertoire consists of four works: “Ara” by the company’s founder and artistic director, Osnel Delgado; “Retrato de Familia” (Family Portrait) by Cuban choreographer Esteban Aguilar; “Vertigo” (Dizziness) by Spanish choreographer Susana Pous; and “Indomitable Waltz” by Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton.
He also underscored the presence, in this tour, of Grettel Morejon, prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Cuba (BNC).
“Very nice, it is Grettel’s first time with us, I hope it will be the beginning of many other performances,” he noted.
Saez informed that “Malpaso,” founded in 2013, will perform at Teatro Nacional de Cuba’s Covarrubias Hall in Havana on January 31, in the context of the Jazz Plaza 2025 International Festival.
