A therapeutic care program for people with neurological development disorders is advancing at the dolphinarium in Cayo Guillermo, in the Jardines del Rey tourist destination, north of the province of Ciego de Ávila.
The initiative, in collaboration with Cuban Medical Services (SMC), consists of dolphin-assisted interventions for children and adults with special needs, said Annys Sánchez, head of the facility.
She added that the interaction with the aquatic mammals is carried out by specialized medical personnel and highly qualified trainers, which constitutes a wonderful experience for both tourists and therapists.
This is the first experience of this modality in tourist regions of the island, whose main objective is to promote health tourism in the keys of central-northern Cuba, Sánchez stated.
She explained that they have obtained remarkable results, mainly with children, who after receiving treatment with innovative medical therapies show progress in their behavior, improve social interaction and, therefore, quality of life.
According to studies, interaction with dolphins promotes the self-esteem of people with autism or another neurodevelopmental disorder, as it helps them increase their confidence and self-perception.
The SMC program provides new perspectives on healthy tourism, by encompassing various modalities whose main motivation is to contribute to the physical, mental and spiritual health of people, through medical and wellness activities, a trend in today's leisure industry worldwide.
The dolphinarium, located in a welcoming natural area at the entrance to Cayo Guillermo, also has other options for the public such as swimming and interaction with cetaceans on the platform and inside the pond, towing and pushing, and is very popular with foreign and national tourists.
