Iconic Sol Palmeras Hotel Set to Reopen This July 1st

The iconic Sol Palmeras hotel, which has been operated by Meliá Cuba for 36 years, is set to reopen its doors on July 1 following an extensive refurbishment and modernization program. The upgrades include a complete redesign of several key areas alongside new guest amenities.

According to recent updates from the Spanish hotel chain, Sol Palmeras was Meliá’s debut property on the island. It was inaugurated in 1990 by Gabriel Escarrer, founder of the Mallorca-based hospitality group, and Fidel Castro Ruz, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution.

The press release highlights that the resort's upgrades were designed with guest comfort in mind, creating a more comfortable, inclusive, and modern environment. Particular attention was paid to the resort's two most popular hubs: the swimming pools.

The majestic main pool—the undisputed heart of the resort—underwent a significant overhaul. The old tiling was completely replaced, and the pool's structure was redesigned to incorporate multi-level access points. This structural update modernizes the pool's aesthetic while significantly improving accessibility for elderly guests and those with reduced mobility. Similarly, the resort's second pool was upgraded with fresh tiling and state-of-the-art underwater LED lighting.

To ensure universal accessibility, architectural barriers in the pool area were eliminated. The bridges leading to the swim-up bar were modified to feature smooth, step-free surfaces. Additionally, safety at the children's splash pool has been enhanced with a new safety railing, allowing parents to relax while their little ones play.

Maintenance, waterproofing, and painting works were also carried out on the main lobby’s dome. Outdoors, new turf was laid in the gardens surrounding the pool areas, and pedestrian pathways were fully repaired. Furthermore, to guarantee guest peace of mind under any circumstance, backup power generators were installed in the bungalow section.

Boasting comfortable guest rooms and cozy bungalows nestled amidst lush tropical gardens, a stellar entertainment program, and a diverse culinary selection, this revitalized property—one of Varadero's most popular resorts—is ready to welcome visitors back with open arms. Guests can look forward to experiencing the signature gold-standard service that Meliá Cuba is renowned for.
