Importance of preserving Intangible Heritage of the Knowledge of the Rum Masters

Safeguarding the declaration as Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage, Preserving the Knowledge of Masters of Cuban light rum is a task that involves the entire population of the country, said Dulce Buergo, President of the CNCU.

In a press conference offered this Thursday on the subject, the head of the Cuban National Commission of Unesco (CNCU), pointed out the importance of continuing to visualize the declaration, since it requires a greater commitment to comply with the safeguard plan of that denomination.

This includes actions and measures that involve the bearers themselves to take care of their integrity and that they remain, as up to now, transmitters of that knowledge, she added. According to the official, this work includes not only the rum masters, but also local governments, brands and, in general, the Cuban population itself.

The press conference, convened by the CNCU, the National Heritage Council and the Cuban Rum Masters Movement, was also chaired by Juan Carlos González and César Augusto Martí Marcelo, first masters of Cuban Rum.

This well-deserved recognition was announced just two weeks ago during the 17th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguard of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held in Rabat, considering that the knowledge of the Cuban Light Rum Masters allows the transmission from generation to generation of scientific knowledge, traditional practices, cultural and social values, associated with the formation of the nation's sugar agro-industrial heritage.
