Geologists and geophysicists from different latitudes will discuss the search, management, and sustainable exploitation of natural resources at the XI International Convention on Earth Sciences, from April 7 to 11, the organizers announced.
Sponsored by the Geological Society of Cuba, the event will host presentations on this island, the Caribbean, and in general on water, oil and gas, construction, earthquake and other geological hazard research, medical geology, geoscience education, as well as any other topic related to the sustainable exploitation of natural resources.
Cuba is the world's ninth largest producer of nickel and the fifth largest producer of cobalt; it is home to the world's fifth largest nickel reserves and the fourth largest cobalt reserves; and it possesses the world's largest open-pit lead mine, according to the text of the convention published by CubaMinrex.
There are also more than nine thousand deposits of metallic and non-metallic minerals, with the advantage that most are close to roads, railways, and ports and can be extracted open-pit at more economical costs. It also has large quantities of other metallic minerals such as copper, iron, chromium, gold, and silver, as well as other non-metallic minerals and salt, such as clays for cement and ceramics, silica sand for glass, and garnet (for abrasives), the announcement highlights.
In addition, it contains gypsum (for the pharmaceutical industry and lightweight panels), zeolite (fertilizers, filter material, and animal feed supplements), salt (for chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial uses, and possibly lithium, feldspar, marble, among others.
As usual, Geociencias 2025 will host five traditional conferences: the 16th Geology Conference, the 13th Geophysics Conference, the 12th Mining Conference, the 10th Oil and Gas Conference, and the 15th Informatics and Geosciences Conference, according to the event's website, which takes place in Havana every two years.
The academic program includes several excursions to Cuban geological sites, as well as workshops and symposia on current topics such as 3D applications, artificial intelligence, critical minerals for the energy transition, and the environmental impacts of mining, among the most significant.
The Mining Conference will address topics such as open-pit and underground mining, safety, energy economics, mineral processing, technological research, new products and processes, technical and economic evaluation of mining projects and technologies, prospects for the development and exploitation of solid minerals, and geology.
Two Symposia on Geology, Exploration and Exploitation of Lateritic-Nitric Deposits, and Mining and Metallurgy will also be held, the event highlights. Founded in 2005 and held at the Havana Convention Center, Geosciences 2023 was attended by approximately 400 researchers, professionals, scientists, and business leaders from some 20 countries, including the United States, China, France, Spain, Mexico, and Uruguay.
