Since 2009, every September 25 is celebrated the International Pharmacist Day, in commemoration of the date when the International Pharmaceutical Federation was founded.
The objective of this celebration is to promote and support the role that these professionals play in disease prevention, health care and medical treatment monitoring.
The International Pharmaceutical Federation is an NGO that has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) and different governments of the world, to offer technical experience and execute joint projects, as well as contribute to action plans that seek advances in sciences, pharmaceutical education and practice.
In 2020, with the challenge of the crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the work of pharmacists is even more important, since they fulfill a mission of advice on health, advice on medicines, vaccination, among other important actions on an international scale. Thus, the motto to celebrate this day in 2020 is "Transform global health."
In Cuba, many of the professionals in this trade are graduates of the Institute of Pharmacy and Food (IFAL) of the University of Havana.
At the end of their studies, a large part of them go on to join important institutions dedicated to this scientific exercise, such as those integrated in the Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Industries of Cuba (BioCubaFarma).
These institutions play a fundamental role in Cuban health and the world in the present situation. Among them are the Drug Research and Development Center (CIDEM), the Drug Marketing and Distribution Company (EMCOMED), the National Center for Biopreparations (BIOCEN), the Cuban Neuroscience Center (CNEURO) and FARMACUBA.
