The 34th edition of the Havana International Book Fair (FIL Havana) will take place from August 10 to 16. Despite the current economic challenges facing the nation, the event was officially announced this Thursday during a press conference, confirming the Russian Federation as the Guest of Honor.

The Russian Ambassador to Cuba, Viktor Viktorovich Koronelli, confirmed the participation of a high-level delegation from his country, including representatives from the Russian Ministries of Culture and Digital Development.

Russia’s role as the Guest of Honor comes after the event was previously postponed due to the country’s complex economic situation. Juan Rodríguez, President of the Cuban Book Institute (ICL), acknowledged that while the current climate remains strained, holding the fair is a "commitment of honor." This edition is dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, featuring a program of activities centered on his life and legacy.

“The Fair is a challenge—an extraordinary effort—but it is being held for the readers who demand it,” Rodríguez stated. He noted that while the current circumstances are more difficult than when the event was first delayed, the collective will of the editorial sector has made its realization possible. He added that the commemoration of Fidel Castro’s centenary serves as a powerful incentive to move forward with the event.

The fair will also pay tribute to writers Marilyn Bobes and José Bell Lara, both recognized for their prolific literary careers.

Despite the hurdles facing the Cuban publishing industry, the event will maintain its national reach, touring the provinces on different dates. The fair will visit Western Cuba from August 21 to 23, the Central region from August 25 to 30, and Eastern Cuba from September 4 to 6. To support this, four million physical copies and over 3,000 digital titles will be made available.

FIL Havana will preserve its traditional schedule of workshops, professional meetings, and cultural events. Pabellón Cuba will serve as a key sub-venue, while the Estación Cultural de Línea y 18 will offer a modern event space with full amenities, strategic proximity to other cultural institutions, and easy transportation access.
