The forests of tree ferns (Cyatheaarborea) permanently embellish and give life to the increasingly reforested Sierra Maestra, in the southeast of the country, the Escambray mountain massif, in the central mountain range of Guamuhaya, as well as the chains of the Rosario and Organs, in the extreme west of Cuba.
The foliage of this native species is widespread and at the same time of such slender and fine branches that they resemble an incomparable green filigree, created by the best of goldsmiths, nature. They are very massive plant formations, whose specimens can reach stems from eight to 20 meters high.
When rising to the sky, the branches spill in plumes or fans, light green and bright, giving a feeling of freshness and very comforting delicacy. A beautiful and inspiring vision of a keepsake snapshot. They say that these plants come from prehistory, it is believed that the Jurassic period, which makes it very likely that some species of dinosaurs lived with them.
But the ferns had better evolutionary luck than the huge saurians and lived to accompany us like strange jewels beyond time and memory. As in the entire tropical strip of the planet in Cuba, tree ferns grow in very humid areas, where extraordinary and resistant species such as orchids and other trees also appear: eucalyptus, cedars, pines, bushes, mites ... and many others of the splendid national forest.
Within the aforementioned mountain ranges we can find their specimens in the so-called cloud forest, located in the highest portion of these elevations, between 1,600 and 1,900 meters, as well as in the so-called mountain rainforest, a little further down, without reaching the base.
Today there are scientific institutions that study the species for conservation purposes, while educating and sensitizing the resident population in those places to contribute to its promotion and development, a whole song to wildlife.
