When you think of visiting Cuba, you may probably imagine amazing beaches, classic cars or tasty rum, but the island is a lot more than just sun and cigars. Cuban gastronomy is bursting with new &Paladares" to discover. So, if you thought that all you were going to eat on your trip to Havana were rice and beans, guess again and get ready. The dining scene in Havana has more to offer than you can imagine.

I’m Alvaro, a 25-year-old entrepreneur and food blogger from Havana. My goal is to connect travelers not only with just food, but also with the stories behind bite. Here my top picks for in Havana.

EL COCINERO
In a city that no longer lacks restaurants, this trend rooftop is located within an abandoned oil factory. A vibrant terrace provides one of Havana’s best dining spots.

The menu includes Pork Dumplings, Tuna Tataki and their amazing Curry Lamb, that you simply must try. El Cocinero is also a convenient option if you’re thinking of heading to Fábrica de Arte Cubano, which is just next door.

AL CARB&OáN
Ivan Justo’s second restaurant and among Havana’s favorite spots for celebrities. Will Smith, Naomi Campbell, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem have already found their way to this excellent paladar. Here, you’ll find traditional Cuban food cooked over charcoal, elevating the flavor with this particular taste. Whether you order their famous Ropa Vieja with Yuca or the Roasted Pork, you certainly won’t be leaving disappointed, specially after combining your meal with their amazing selection of cocktails and live music.

CASA MIA
With its restaurant inside the house where the owners grew up, you can perceive what huge sentimental value it holds for its creators. Caribbean and Cuban cuisine are perfectly combined to upgrade your Cuban gastronomic experience. BBQ Ribs, Truffle Risotto and Pineapple Shrimp are among my recommendations, but don’t hesitate in ordering any other of their specials. Casa Mia Paladar is a safe bet while visiting the Vedado neighborhood, offering tasty meals and friendly staff always ready to help you.

LA GUARIDA
La Guarida may be Havana’s best-known paladar. This private restaurant first opened its doors in 1996 after being the set of Cuba’s famous movie: &Strawberry and Chocolate." The menu is very immersive and combines an exciting list of flavors from all over the globe. The Lamb Tikka Masala is amazing, as well as the Fish Carpaccio. Currently one of the few places in the city where you can enjoy a good beef filet, and even better if it’s with their blue cheese sauce. As an icon in the city, La Guarida is an oasis for those wandering in Central Havana. Exploring this building, is to bring back to life the luxury of what it once was, an opulent mansion.

FANGIO HABANA
Spanish Chef Sergio Hernández surprises anyone who visits his restaurants, not only by his finely curated menu, but also for the outstanding quality of his imported products. The Mediterranean based menu also blends Cuban and Thai flavors – including a breathtaking Masaman Curry Pork and a Red Wine Lamb. Their wine list and signature cocktails are not to be missed either. The dining area includes a peaceful terrace where you can enjoy your meal with a good cigar.
