Donna Ramsammy James: A Multicultural Fashion Designer

Since she took her first steps in the fashion industry at the tender age of five, Donna Ramsammy James has forged a path filled with passion and creativity. She began modeling at community events and simultaneously immersed herself in the world of ballet, cultivating an artistic sensitivity that would later translate into her successful career as a designer.

13-donna-ramsammy-guyana-fashion-2.jpgDonna’s motivation for creating new collections goes beyond aesthetics; her designs reflect her feelings and the influences of her surroundings at that moment; such as the sky, the sea, the trees, and the clouds.

Nature deeply inspires her. Her goal is to preserve traditional and ancestral fashion, capturing the rich cultural diversity of Guyana.

The country, with its vibrant fusion of Indian, African, Chinese, European and Amerindian influences, has been an inexhaustible source of creativity for her work.

Throughout her career, Donna has launched numerous clothing lines, each infused with her unique vision. She feels particularly satisfied with the reception of her custom designs for models and “plus-size” bodies, as her inclusive approach aims to empower everyone, instilling pride and confidence through fashion.

In 2024, she celebrated the Silver Jubilee of her brand SHAPE2000, a line that encapsulates “the softness of Asia, the depth of Africa, and the color of the Caribbean.” This collection has been recognized as one of her best to date, highlighting the richness of the cultural traditions that inspire her.

One of the most significant moments in her career was her participation in the Ovacome fashion shows, a UK charity organization that supports fighting ovarian cancer. The models who participated in the three shows were brave warriors who shared their stories in an act of empowerment and solidarity.

Recognition has come to Donna in the form of prestigious awards, including the title of Best Costume Band Designer at the Mashramani Parade in 2004 and a national award in 2009 for her contribution to the arts and culture. Her work has shone in various cities around the world, from New York to London, and from Barbados to Jamaica.

In addition to her work as a designer, Donna is dedicated to mentoring young people and adults about the importance of personal presentation and respectful behavior in all areas.

The story of Donna Ramsammy James is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of fashion, capable of uniting cultures and communities. Her legacy continues to grow as she inspires others with her art and steadfast commitment to inclusion and diversity.
