Sunset in Cuban Fashion

Since its inception, CubaPLUS Guyana has dedicated itself to celebrating and promoting the excellence of design and creativity through Cuban fashion. On this occasion, we delve into the vision and work of Katia Gil, our Fashion Advisor and Coordinator, to explore current topics in the industry.

11-cuban-fashion-marabu-1.jpgHow has your experience been with CubaPLUS Guyana?
My experience working with the magazine has been rich and varied. I have had the opportunity to collaborate with designers, artisans, photographers, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, and more, in a dynamic and creative environment. I am very happy to be part of this project and to contribute my knowledge in the fashion field.

In today’s world, the trend of modeling for those over 50 has been on the rise. What do you think?
I believe it is a positive trend.

It is important that beauty and diversity are represented in all areas, including modeling.

Older individuals possess a wealth of experiences and unique beauty, and they should have the opportunity to share them with the world. The acceptance and representation of people of all ages promotes inclusion and positivity.

Do you think Cuba will also join this trend?
We are currently moving in this direction through various initiatives and social movements. Cuban designers and brands are increasingly interested in creating clothing that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also affordable and representative of the diversity of people. This includes designing clothes that fit different body types, as well as incorporating styles that reflect the cultures and identities of various communities.

We are also seeing an increase in the appearance of diverse models on runways and in advertising campaigns. This includes utilizing models of different races, genders, and ages. Some local initiatives and brands have begun showcasing models of varying sizes and features, indicating a shift towards a more inclusive representation of Cuban fashion. I can mention some examples like designer Dayamí Veguería with her ENTALLA project, the Innātus brand, LIMITED and Beyond Roots, the first cultural center dedicated to promoting Afro culture, identity, and aesthetics; as well as the Marabū Hechoencuba brand, among others.

11-cuban-fashion-marabu-2.jpgIn short, while the path toward inclusive fashion is still evolving, there is a positive movement towards the acceptance and representation of all people in the Cuban fashion industry.

Since you mentioned Marabū, how was the experience of being the new muse and face of the Spring-Summer 2025 campaign and modeling for this Cuban brand been?
Marabū is a recently founded brand been that stands out for its focus on design and fashion, led by designer Yaimara Muñoz. It was a pleasant surprise for me when she chose me as the image and muse for her new campaign Atardecer (Sunset), because in addition to the joy of returning to modeling, it is an honor to collaborate with a quality brand that represents and promotes values such as sustainability, inclusion, uniqueness, and authenticity, with which I identify.

It is exciting, and I appreciate the trust placed in me and the opportunity to represent a brand committed to these important values.

I hope this campaign is successful and conveys the positive and empowering messages that the Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes, through this campaign, I want to inspire other women to have confidence in themselves, to accept their uniqueness, and not to be afraid to live authentically. I firmly believe that fashion can be a powerful platform for sending positive messages and promoting meaningful changes in society.

I also want to convey that as a model, it is important to be open to new challenges, to constantly learn, and to be willing to evolve with the industry.
