Preserving Guyanese culture through music and championing it's authentic identity through art is the main objective of the well-known duo Gavin and Chucky, created eight years ago.
Gavin Mendonca began his musical career in punk rock, while Marlon "Chucky" Adams, leader of the Buxton Fusion School of Music project, has dedicated his entire life to percussion, specifically with the Djembe (drum of African origin). The two met in 2015, at the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival, a world music camp event held in the beautiful Rupununi Savannah, Guyana.
Perhaps that is why the festival, among the many musical events they have participated in, has been the most important for Gavin and Chucky. It inspired them to embark on their Folk It Up project to record all of Guyana's folk songs on a series of albums, two of which have already been released (2019 and 2022).
Volume 3 is being recorded live in the Iwokrama Rainforest, so listeners will feel as if they are in the rainforest of Guyana while listening to the album, which will be released later in 2023 via Kross Kolor Records.
For these talented musicians this project is of utmost importance, as their main mission is to contribute to the preservation of Guyanese Folk Music and then traditions through the Arts. According to them, the most important thing is to always maintain and preserve the true identity of Guyana. "We remind everyone that, no matter the struggle, we just have to make our best effort to move forward and work together for our goals and all will be well," they considered.
