The new bridge that will link the east and west banks of the Demerara River, located in the eastern part of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, will be ready for use within two years, approximately, which will benefit thousands of people who use this route every day for transportation, including loads.
Information released in Georgetown by the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) adds that the new connection will replace the aging floating bridge. Demerara Harbor Bridge (DHB), which has outlived its useful life by several decades.
The new bridge, whose construction began on the 16th, will be a 2.65-kilometer, four-lane, long-span fixed cable-stayed structure that will cross the river with a width of driving surface of about 23.6 meters, it has a bike lane, it will put an end to the closures to vehicle traffic with a fixed span of 50 meters high to attend to the free flow of boats without interruption. To do this, the river will be dredged along some 13.5 kilometers, allowing the navigation of deep-draft vessels.
The construction is being carried out by a joint venture led by China Railway and Construction Corporation (International) Limited.
