The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, and the Cuban ambassador to that South American nation, Jorge Francisco Soberón Luis, spoke out for closer relations between the two nations, the Foreign Ministry reported today.
The Guyanese president received Soberón the day before at his office, who presented him with the Letters of Credence as the new ambassador of the Caribbean island in Georgetown.
At the meeting, President Ali pointed out that the two countries have a special bond that extends beyond the political sphere and expressed his gratitude for Cuba#39;s support for the development of Guyana, particularly in the training of human resources.
He also said that Guyana and Cuba can integrate their efforts in the areas of food security and production, said the note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For his part, the Cuban diplomat thanked Guyana for its continued strong support and recognized the many areas in which the two countries can further collaborate.
The meeting was also attended by Guyana#39;s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Elisabeth Harper.
Guyana and Cuba established diplomatic relations 50 years ago.
