Alex Allen Persaud, a doctor graduated in Cuba in 2013, has just successfully completed his specialization at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Havana, the Guyana embassy in Cuba reported this Friday on its Facebook page.
According to the information, Dr. Persaud is hopeful that Guyana will be able to offer world-class treatment for associated diseases for which patients must travel abroad for treatment. The Guyanese specialist, originally from New Hope, East Bank Demerara, comes from a humble family. He first worked as a farmer and market vendor, then as a pharmacy assistant at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC).
After concluding his general medicine studies in Cuba, thanks to a government scholarship, he returned to his country to provide services at the GPHC and later joined the team of professionals at the Buxton Health Center in the Fourth Region. In 2019, he returned to Cuba to study a postgraduate course in Neurology, which he completed under the tutelage of some of the best professors in the country in that specialty and concluded with honors.
Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of diseases affecting the nervous system. Conditions commonly seen in neurology are headaches, strokes, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron diseases, and neuromuscular disorders, among others.
Dr. Persaud, who returns to his country this weekend to render his valuable services to his compatriots, has expressed his deep gratitude to the Guyana government and its embassy in Havana for its continued support during the last three years. Finally, in a message to Cuba, he said: "Your country is my second home. And thanks to you and your government I have this opportunity to serve my people in Guyana."
